Getting Your House Ready For Spring – Three Things You Must Do.

Hopefully, the cold weather is behind us. Old Man Winter was pretty powerful this year.  The days here in Columbus and across Ohio are getting a little longer, there is less frost on our windshields in the morning and the afternoon sun feels pretty good. While we might already be planning a summer getaway or thinking of our next trip to the beach or lake, it’s important to take time and pay some attention to our homes. The house which kept us cozy and warm these last few months and protected us from winter’s chill will likely need some TLC to get her ready for Spring.

Winter weather can take its toll. Materials contract and expand, water gets trapped and turns to ice, animals dig and burrow to seek shelter from the elements and snow and ice can cause and create problems we might not see for weeks or months. So, before we pull out the inflatable pool and dust off the beach chairs, let’s take a quick look at three important things you can do to get your house ready for warm weather. The Strait & Lamp Group is here to help!

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Water, wind, rain, snow, ice, freezing rain, sleet – all that stuff that batters your fences. Even the best materials  installed by the most skilled contractors can take a beating. Check your fence to see how everything looks. Check where the material is fastened. Go over any breaks. Check both sides to get a better idea of how the weather has affected it.  The elements can be destructive, but far too often, you might not notice the damage until it’s too late.  If there is an issue or something looks concerning, fix it before it becomes a bigger problem.  If your fence is made of wood or an engineered product, we can help. We can help match the existing design or, if you’re looking to replace or install, we carry top-quality lines of privacy-fencing material.

Baseboards Bashed and Bruised

We have all been stuck inside the house for way too long. Some of us have used this quarantine as a time to give our home a complete and total “quaranclean.” Closets have been organized, garage space has been maximized, stuff we no longer need has been given away or sold. Our floors have been trampled on, cleaned, trampled on and cleaned again. But when you look down, something just isn’t 100 percent gleaming like you want it to. Maybe it’s time to upgrade your baseboards. Baseboards are the victims of shoes, feet, pets, vacuum cleaners, mops and plenty of other stuff. They get dinged, chipped and battered all the time. Paint can cover up some imperfections and certain kinds of varnish can spruce them up, but it might be time to think about starting anew. At our Dublin Millworks, we can make historical reproductions (we match your sample), create a custom look or you can choose any of the standard mouldings we have in the showroom. Our state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated craftsmen can produce exactly what you are looking for – efficiently and accurately.

All Hands (And Feet) On Deck

Finally – we get to enjoy Columbus’ legendary Spring weather. Not too hot. Not too cold. A nice breeze flowing in. Now is the time to spruce up or replace your deck. Start by blowing off all the leaves, salt, dirt and whatever else might have accumulated over the last few months. Once you do that, examine the decking, railing and steps. Depending on the age of your deck, you may need to replace a portion or all of it. If that is the case, The Strait & Lamp Group has a full line of high-quality decking materials to help get your deck party-ready. We carry pressure-treated wood, cedar and composite decking. Our decking experts can help design an outdoor space that works for you and represents your style. You have the skills to build it, we also carry the full line of tools and hardware you need to get the job done.
